Prison Visit Files, 1962-2018, Undated

Extent:: 14.1 cubic ft.
Scope and content:: The Prison Visit Files consist of materials created or gathered by the Correctional Association’s statutory responsibility for inspecting correctional facilities, adolescent detention facilities, and local prisons/jails. This responsibility was carried out primarily by the Prison Visiting Committee (also referred to as the Institutions Visiting Committee or the Prison Visit Project), but in the 20th century, individual members, such as the Correctional Association’s General Secretary or President, made occasional independent visits. Materials primarily include correspondence, surveys and statistics, visit reports, and project materials and reports by the Prison Visiting Committee. Two separate visits to non-New York correctional facilities are included with this series, a 1977 visit to the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility by former President, Adam McQuillan, and a 1998 visit by the Visiting Committee to the Kingston Penitentiary in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, arranged by the Correctional Service of Canada.

Using these materials

Access:: The archives are open to the public and anyone is welcome to visit and view the collections.

Restrictions:: Given the large quantity of correspondence with incarcerated individuals and the inclusion of their personal identifiable information, the series has been completely restricted. Requests to view materials in Series 3 must be discussed with an archivist.
Collection restrictions:: Access to portions of Series 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8, is restricted as they contain personal identifiable information related to incarcerated individuals and others, and correspondence with incarcerated individuals. Restricted folders in these series are noted at the file-level, and requests to view these materials must be discussed with a staff member. Series 3 is completely restricted due to a large quantity of personal identifiable information of incarcerated individuals, and correspondence with incarcerated individuals throughout the series. Requests to view Series 3 must be discussed with a staff member. Consult a staff member for further details.
Collection terms of access:: The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of copyright. Whenever possible, the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives will provide information about copyright owners and other restrictions, but the legal determination ultimately rests with the researcher. Requests for permission to publish material from this collection should be discussed with the Head of Special Collections and Archives.
