‘NO INVENTORY CHANGE. (Conta, he
‘Last Wednesday, the Union. Office
contacted the Turbine management and
asked if some other way could be
found to take inventory that would
- act deprive the hourly rated workers!
_of a day's pay. They were made
“ aware off the actions other depart-
, ments had undertaken'to resolve the
problem, In'spite of this, their
reply wasn't very optimistic or re-.:
assuring. They agreed to give the
matter further consideration. ie

is a eal lous one, emphasizing a com=

in the local and area’ newspapers
if a so-called "work stoppage" took

position on this very important
matter,
DON'T BE FOOLED BY
UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES
Don't be fooled bj nemployment
statistics. That's the yning Sen,
Paul Douglas (D.,I11.)gives. Douglas
says the present method the Govt. .
uses to-figure joblessness fails to
give the true percentage of unem-
ployed workers.
The Census. Bureau's sample of
35,000 families includes many self-
_ employed and unpaid workers in fam-
lly enterprises who rarely can be
‘listed .as unemployed. Eliminating
this group from the.over-all work
force -ahd' adjusting the Bureau's
sample would have brought the per-.
centage of unemployed, age corrected)
for seasonal factors, to 8.9% in
June, for instance, instead of the
73% commonly used. Second factor is
the understatement of part-time work
or "involuntary unemployment..." Corr-
-ecting the statistics for this» fac+
tor would add 2.4% more to rate of
unemployment for June, bringing’ the
total to 11.3%. Giving due weight.td
these factors, it can be seen "the
total proportion of time lost. by

Recently a serious lack of work
developed in the Res. Lab, Tool Room,
The Company informed Board Member
Korszun that it would be necessary
to lay off several tool room employes ©
with service of 20 years or more, |
A meeting was held by Korszun
with the affected group who voted
unanimously to rotate the group in .
an attempt to avert layoffs in the
group. After this good union pos-
‘ition was taken, Mr. Korszun was
able.to negotiate ‘a rotation sched-
ule with management «
We hope that management will do.
their. job by going all out to get
work for these employés by either
farming in work or. scheduling some
of the work to be done in the future
for now... Other Depts. in the plant
gould help by giving some of their
work-to: the Res. Labs ‘instead of
farming it outside the plant as was
done recently in the Steam Turbine
