MEANY SUPPORTS FOREIGN AID PROGRAM

George Weany, President of AFL-CIO, speaking before a nationwide

radio audience, urged all Americans to write their Senators and
_ongressmen’ in support of President Kennedy's foreign aid program.

. Meany. completely rejected the contention some individuals have
expressed that the money could better be spent in relieving domestic

unemployment .

CONTINUES TO HIRE

Employment conditions in the
Large Steam Turbine Department con~-
tinue to improve in several sect-
ions. Although the Company has
announced that some’ rehirings aré
of a temporary nature; nevertheless,
it is felt that the future outlook
appears to be optimistic,

Information received indicates
that 1962 will be somewhat better
than this year. -If present trends
continue, 1963 should also be a
good year.

Some of the sections which are
rehiring are: In Bldg. 273, Large
_Lathes, Floor Assembly Shelis and
Hoods, Ereetion, Assemble and
Connect, Boring Mills. In #285,
Chip, File and Grind, Cutter Grina
and Milling Machine,

AREA COUNCIL URGES ADOPTION
CHAPTER #18+STATE SANITARY CODE

At the regular meeting of the
Schenectady Area Central Labor
Council held on July 26, 1961, a
very important matter was discussed,
' namely the New York State Sanitary
Code Chapter #18, which pertains to
meat inspection and its minimum
requirements .

following counties: ‘Schenectady,
Schoharie, Montgomery and Fulton.

In my article of last week the
line which stated-"There is.no loss

TOP BRASS = INDISPENSABLE?

The Caterpillar Tractor: Co.

publication "Folks", tries to jus
tify its position. with regard to
excessive salaries and bonuses paid
to executives.

This was the result of the
United Auto Workers! charge that
Industry is paying excessive salar-
ies and bonuses to their top brass»

The editorial relates to the
hourly paid workers that the supply
and demand requires high pay for
exceptional talent and ability.

They compared company execut-
ives to top ball players and enter-
tainers, It pointed out that the
average executive with $150,000
annual income only nets. a measly
60,000 a year after taxes,

The editorial suggests that
this is very little reward for the
contributions made. by these so-~

Vice-President Bill Kelly
brought the incident to the attention
of Union Relations officials in
Steam-Turbine. He asked for an ex-
planation as to why a G.E. tube was
replaced by one made in France.

JOB RECALL INFORMATION

In reply to a query from Union
Headquarters, the Company stated
that there are between 400 and 500
people who still have recall rights
in the plant.

When asked how they would call
back the people without recall rights
who had been out less than=three
years and who could get th service
back by being rehired, the Company —
stated that they would rehire gen+
erally by service but only on a
selective basis.

When asked what this meant, they
said that they were reserving the

who, in. their opinion, . had bad work
records.
