Stratton Reluctant fo Endorse Forand Bill
The members of Local 301, ‘tho®
‘Central Labor Council and. the
301 Pensioner Club and many
her public minded citizens in
our Community have called on
_ Rep, Samuel S, Stratton to tike
nw firm. stand on the Forand Bill
which would bring much needed
ntedical, surgical and nursing aid
to our older citizens at a timo in
life when this service is meeded
most.
Despite numerous iettars,. post-
cards and petitions, Rep, Stratton
. has not taken a firm stand on this
Rill, Instead he says, “Of course
I recognize ‘the tremendous prob-
lem which our older citizens face
in providing needed medical care
at a time when they are onan
extremely limited income, and 1
certainly do feel that some steps
‘must be taken to meet this gitu-
ation.”
He then added, “Actually, the
~ Forand Bill is one of several al-
ternative measures that have
heen suggested, Senator Kennedy,
for example, has introduced a
slightly different bill of his own
over in the Senate.”
“While I am very much in ac-
cord with the objectives of the
Forand Bill, and feel that Oon-
gress should have an opportunity
to discuss the whole issue, I do
avant to have an opportunity to
look over carefully some of the
other BILLS as -well before. de-
ciding which one represents the
best and most effective approach
to this problem.”
The probiems of the aged and
aging have been under study by
various, committees for the past
eight years and the Forand Bill
covers the needs of our older citi-
vons without taking funds out of
the U. S&S. Treasury,: It would re-
duce Federal Spending.

CAREY, REUTHER TESTIMONY
STINGS DIRKSEN TO WRATH
Senate Minority Leader. McKinley Di R-II.) -has accused

ments" about the Eisenhower Administration in. the course of
testimony on health care legislation, ;
Dirksen erupted ‘during the course. of ‘McNamara Committec

was read, and when’ James B. Carey of the Electrical, Radio &
Machine Workers’ testified.
Routher's testimony asserted that although Eisenhower had indi-
cated at his Feb. 3 press conference that a social security tax hike
“to make greater provision of the aged” was under consideration,
Vice Pres, Nixon and Sec. of Health, Education and Welfare Arthur
8. Flemming were engaged in “a retreat from this presidential
promisr.” :
Dirksen shouted that ' ‘TL. think that is a stinking slatement from
Walter Reuther,” adding that” Nixon and Flemming are just as
interested as Walter Routher ‘anyone olse” in medical care for
the aged, and that furthermore. Eisenhower had not made ‘any
“promise.” : . ,
Twenty- four hours later, when Carey accused the White House
of “shameful surrender to the American Medical Association and
the insurance companies GOP leader called this “another
stinking charge” and an e statement.” When Carey tried to
speak, Dirksen said: “Supp you just keep your mouth shut.”
Sen. Joseph S. Clark (D-Pa.) said Dirksen’s comments .were
“uncalled for and undignified.”
