GUESTS PRESENT:

Mike Welch from the Catskill Center
COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA): Mike Welch (Catskill
Center's CSA specialist) gave a presentation on CSA.
In general CSAs are farms in which consumers buy a
share of the following years production. Thus a share
owner will get a portion of the raspberries, the peas,
the tomatos, the beets and the potatoes grown on the
farm that year. Produce is distributed periodically,
weekly or bi-weekly. Often there is, in addition to
the fee, a work requirement, maybe 8 hours per season.
Robyn Van En's book is a good source for information
on CSAs. Several CSAs are operating successfully in
Eastern New York. The Catskill Center will provide
technical and educational assistance to help start
CSAs. There was some discussion about the SLT
sponsoring a public meeting about CSA for farmers.
Catskill Center would be willing to help pay for
publicity and provide a speaker.
LONG TRAIL: Fred Turnbull gave a presentation on the Long
Trail extension. The Long Trail currently runs from
New Jersey to the Catskill Mountains, but it is being
extended to the Mohawk River. The route will lead
through Schoharie County. The SLT could help since
the trail will largely go over private property all of
which will require agreements with the owners. The
contact person is Dale Hughes, PO Box 177, Lake Hill,
NY 12448.
OPEN SPACE CONSERVATION PLAN: Fred Turnbull further
reported on the Draft Open Space Conservation Plan.
The Region 4 hearings will be held 16 January at the
Schenectady Public Library. There will be a workshop
from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon and public hearings from
2:00 pm to 5:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The
public comment period will end 27 January. Gene
McCaffrey will bring copies of the draft plan to the
next SLT meeting. There are two copies of the plan
for public viewing in the Stamford DEC office.
IRS-501c3: The IRS has notified SLT that they will not
approve the 501c3 application. The SLT has three
options. Accept the ruling and not get a 501c3
status. Appeal the ruling which would require paid
legal council and much expense. Withdraw our
application, get some help in reviewing our
application and resubmit it. The later course has
been chosen. We are currently waiting for the return
of our files.
LPEP (IROQUOIS PIPE LINE): The proposal for Iroquois Pipe
Line funds was turned down. It appears that they
wanted projects would be finished quickly. The Board
thanks Gene McCaffrey for all his hard work and
original thinking in writing this proposal.
CSA WORKSHOP: A committee, of Sandra Scouten-Ford (Chair),
Mary Jo O'Donnell, and Dan Schuppel, was formed to
coordinate an informational meeting, which should be
targeted for spring, about community supported
agriculture.
LTA SEMINARS: Karl Westphal gave report on a tape of a
seminar, about fund raising, from the LTA Rally.
NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be on the third
Thursday as usual, 16 January 1992, from 7:30 pm to
9:30 pm at the Cooperative Extension Office in
Cobleskill.
ADJOURNMENT: The
meeting was
adjourned at 9:40
pm.
