would not rule on Bundy“s sanity until he

Bundy’s lawvers say that decision leaves
Bundy’s sanity in doubt and that he should not
be executed until it is resolved.
@ hearings to determine Bundy’s mental
competency for the Chi Cimesa case had been set
for Monday in Fart Lauderdale. But defense
jawrers and prosecuters asked for a delayr

Media scrambles to witness Bundy executian
By MICHAEL McCLELLAND
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -~- (UPI) -- The pending execution of
serial killer Ted Bundy has sent newspaper: television and
radio station reporters scrambling for the limited number of
seats alloted for witnesses at the execution.
Florida Press Association officials said Thursday they had
received more than 50 reauests from newspapers, magazines and
free lance writers hepine to attend a Monday afternoon news
conference with Bundy and ta witness his scheduled 7 a.m.
Tuesday execution.
The Flerida Assaciation of Broadcasters has received 70
requests from television and radia stations from as far away
as Seattle, Salt Lake City and Denver.
““This is the one they“ve ali been waitinas for.** said FPA
director Dick Shelton. “*There is just a tremendous media
interest and public interest. They all want to be there te
see what harrens.“*
Shelton said the execution of a less noterious killer may
draw as few as three or four witness resuests from
NewsParers.
Scores of media representatives ranging from weekly
newspapers to Pecple magazine are expected ta be outside
Florida State Prison Tuesday mornings.
Under Derartment of Corrections guidelines, only 30 will
be allowed into the prisen for a Bundy news conference on
Monday. Only 12 will be present to witness the actual
execution.
Four seats at the interview and two at the execution are
reserved for the two wire services. One seat at both the
interview and execution is reserved for a newspaper from Lake
City: heme of Bundy victim Kimberly Diane Leach.
The Press Association trimmed down the campetition br
restricting the selection ta Flarida newspapers oniy. That
eliminated the 306 or so national magazines, out-of-state
newspapers and free-lance writers whe had sought admittance.
““It being a Flerida prison, a Florida death warrant: a
Florida prisoner, and him beins executed for a Florida
murder: Plus beings sentenced for two more. it only makes
sense to draw from Florida newspapers,“* Shelton said.
That still leaves 17 newspapers vring for 12 slats at the
interview and four at the execution, Shelton plans to make
the final selection by drawing names cut of a hat.
The breadcasters’ sroup already has selected its five
‘witnesses and was ta decide Friday on the 13 interview~
participants. The sroup is makins its choice based on how
many viewers or listeners a particular reporter will be able
ta reach.
Bundy has also been sentenced ta death for the murders of
two Florida State University students murdered while they
slept at their sorearity house. He is a prime suspect in
nearly three dozen murders, beatings and disaprearances
invelvine youns women,» mostiv in the Northwest.

As an adult: renamed Theedore Robert Bundy threush

and hunted as a maniacal killer of women.
He was a suspect in as many as three dozen murders in four

In collese, he cultivated an autward facade of normalcy
and gained a reputation as a hard-working student. His
friends were not surprised in later vears to hear of his ur

Transferring ta the University of Washinston to enroll in
an intensive study of Chinese, Bundy began fashionina the
public side of his beings -- bright, witty, handsome.
But behind the air of self-assurance lurked the ather Ted

Bundy rambled aimlessiv for awhile. He dropred cut of

Bundy, a veteran of twe GOP campaiens, Jumped at the

to use his talents and assertiveness.
But Fletcher lost, and Bundy was cast adrift asain.
However, Bundy’s tenure with Fletcher was educational. On
the campaisn trial, Bundy learned social sraces and honed his
skill at attractins women.
In September 1949. Bundy met Liz» a divercee and the
mother of a youns daushter. She was the last woman he would

They went on picnics and talked on the phone. But as clase

Campus Police Official Ready To Ciose Books On Oreson Case
d438ed-rth
CORVALLIS, Gre. -- (AP) -- If Ted Bundy is put to death in
the Florida electric chair as scheduled Tuesday, officials at
Oreson State University say it will close the books on one of
the school’s most famous crimes.
William Harris. the university’s assistant director of
police and security. said Thursday he remains convinced that
Bundy murdered Reberta Kathleen Parks.
Parks left her dormitory room on May 6, 1974, ta buy a hot
fudse sundae. She wasn’t seen alive again.
@ vear to the day later, Harris received a telerhone call
from King County: Wash.e, that ended his frustrating search
for Parks. Washington authorities had found a skull ina
remote mountainous area east of Seattie. Later. dental
records identified the skull as that of the missing coed.
The remains of three other youns women missing from
Washinston were found at the same time and place -- only a few
miles from the srat where the bodies of two women were
discovered the previous fall.
All six women -~ plus two others who disappeared in 1974
and were never found —- are believed by authorities in several
states to be victims of Bundy, whe earlier this week last a
U.S. Supreme Court appeal of his death sentence on Florida
crimes.
The justices rejected arauments that Bundy: 42. was
mentally incompetent when he stood trial in 1980 for the
slaving of a iZ-vear-old sirl in Lake City: Fla.
Bundy also was sentenced to die for the 1978 killinas of
tue Florida State University sorority sisters.
Althoush he can’t tie Bundy directly toe Parks“ death.
Harris said there’s little doubt amons Taw officers that
Parks was also one of his victims.
“Yes, I’d be satisfied with Bundy“s execution, and Tf
would close the case,“* Harris said.
Harris said he‘d like to get a canfession from Bundy. But,
Harris conceded, Bundy probably will carry the story with him

TALLAHASSEE. Fla. —-- (AF) -- Attorneys for Ted Bundy turned to the Florida Supreme Court
today in their attemet to halt the convicted multiple killer’s scheduled execution Tuesday for
the 1978 slaving of a 12Z-vear-old sirl.
The high court was scheduled te hear Bundy“s apreal at 9 a.f.
The sessian was scheduled after Circuit Judse John Peach in Lake City denied three claims
Thursday in Bundy‘s appeal and refused ta stay the executian scheduled at 7 a.m. Tuesday at
Florida State Prison near Starke.
While atternevs make their arguments, Bundy was scheduled to meet with FBI officials at the
prison. He also is scheduled to meet with authorities from Colarade, Idaho. Washinston and
Utah through the weekend. He is suspected in the murders of three dozen women in several
Western states.
One of Bundy’s attorneys, James Coleman of Washingtons D.C.> remained confident Bundy would
win a fourth reprieve from the electric chair.
““Werll win. His claims are valid,“* Coleman said Thursday.
Calumbia County State Attorney Jerry Blair: whe prosecuted the former University of Utah
Jaw student for the 1978 murder of Kimberly Leach: said it is time for Bundy ta be executed.
“Sit makes a mockery of our judicial system every day that Ted Bundy continues to live:“*
said Blair. ““People are virtually up in arms about this and every day that justice is
delaved, justice is either denied or at least diminished. “*
<AZ> In an interview with CNN Thursday,» Bundy said: -“I da take it rersenally when I hear
that
eple want me killed.”°
<A> The defense appéal centered on allegations that Bundy’s competence to stand trial wasnt
adequately reviewed in either the Leach case or an earlier conviction in the slayings of two
Chi Omesa sorerity sisters at Flerida State University.
Attorneys alsa arsued Bundy shouldn’t be executed for the Leach slaving while his
competency during the Chi Omega slavings is still being challenged in federal court and
Circuit Judse Wallace Jepling improperly discussed the Bundy case with prasecuters without
defense attorners present.
All claims were rejected by Peach, whe heard the arsuments after Jorling disaualified
himself Thursday.
Peach said the defense shauld have raised same of the claims earlier and were procedurally
barred from raisins them at this time. He made his rulins after hearing about 40 minutes of
oral arsuments.
Gov. Bob Martinez. who signed the death warrant for Bundy in the Leach murder» said
Wednesday he wouldn’t delay Bundy’s execution even though a civil atterney for Bundy said he
could cooperate with investigators on unsolved cases.
--In-Olempias Washes Gove Booth Gardner said Thursday-he considers it inappropriate for Bundy
te play for time by offering to talk about his crimes.
SSIt would be nice to have the information he misht be willing te divulge. But I don’t
think that (reprieve) is the means te set it,”* said Gardner, a backer of capital punishment.
“SI don’t think his helding that information as ransom at this juncture is appropriate.“
Bundy, whose case was depicted in the televisian miniseries *"The Deliberate Strangers “*
was sentenced ta death for the Feb. 9, 1978. murder of Miss Leach, a Lake City Junior hieh
school student.
In a separate trial, he also was sentenced to death for murdering two Fiorida State
University Chi Omesa sisters in their serority house in January in the early mornings hours of
dan. 15, 1772.
Martinez siened the death warrant Tuesday» Jess than an hour after the U.S. Supreme Court
declined to hear new arsuments to set aside Bundy’s death sentence.
Bundy has been granted a stay of execution three times before. The last was issued Nev. 17:
1986, six hours before his scheduled executian: when the tith U.S. Circuit Court of Arreals in
Atlanta sent the case back for an evidentiary hearing.
The appeals court, and later the U.S. Supreme Court, rejected the arpeal.

Leach killing did net fit Bundy’s pattern
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- (UPI) -- Ted Bundy. the serial killer Jinked to three dozen deaths:
faces execution Tuesday for a crime that departed from his murderous obsession for attractive
youns women with their hair parted in the middle.
Kimberly Diane Leach disapreared Feb. 9, 1977. Her bedy was found April 17 under a
collapsed hos shed in a Florida state park.
She had been beaten and sexually molested -- a Bundy trademark in the nearly three dozen
murders, beatings and disaprearances in which he is a prime suspect -- but there was one major
difference.
Kimberly was 12 years old.
That did not fit Bundy“s pattern of attacking women in their late teens and early 20s. It
may alsa have been a sian that the former law school student with Ivy Leasue soad locks was
growins unstable, at war with the demons rasins inside him.
The siri’s death came less than a month after the beatins deaths of two Chi Omesa sorority
members as they slept in their sorerity house beds on the Florida State University campus in
Tallahassee.
Bundy also sentenced to die for the deaths of Lisa Levy and Margaret Bowman was six hours
away from execution in 1986 when he won a reprieve.
The sorority house slavings, coupled with Leach’s death: prompted psychiatrists ta conclude
Bundy was losing control after a hamicidal odyssey that spanned at least four years and
stretched from the Northwest and Utah ta Florida.
After Bundy was captured in Pensacela, Fla.: on Valentine“s Day 1978 and returned ta
Tallahassee, police suestioned him about the sorority killings. The alse asked him what he
knew of the Leach disarrearance.
“Well, vou gentlemen knew that vou were setting invalved with a pretty stranse creature
and vou have known that for days.” Bundy rerlied. “But. remember this: I’m the most
cold-hearted son of a bitch you'll ever meet. “*
Psycholosists said Bundy besan to lose control of his faculties shortly before the sorority
killings, sugsestins he was uncenscicusly trvins to set causht.
<A2> A man as smart as Bundy nermally would knew his path could be traced with stolen credit
cards, vet Bundy left an easy trail for law officers by usins one stolen credit card after
anather fallewing the sarority murders.
It did not matter to him by that time that Leach was net the type of woman he normally
desired ta possess: psychiatric reports said.
By the time he encountered the voungster> Bundy was completely aut of cantrol, consumed by
his canfessed desire to “*possess women by whatever means necessary: a psychiatric
evaluation concluded.
The cracks in Bundy’s maniacal armor also were obvious to a number of people the nisht of
the sorority slavings.
Terri Murehy: a waitress at Sherrad‘’s popular bar, said Bundy was “*overly pelite**’ while
she waited on him the nisht of Jan. 15, 1978.
Connie Hastings: a customer who also noticed Bundy. said the eves of the handsome former
jaw student causht her attention -- but chillinsiv.
<“He was scanning all the giris:“* Hastinss testifed later at Bundy‘s murder trial. *“He
causht my ere several times. It was a stare that kinda bothered me.°*
Bundy claimed he had nothing te do with the Chi Omesa murders. He said he was *‘pretty
sure’’ he spent the entire night at a nearby rooming house.
That denial was consistent with Bundy’s refusal te admit any link to the crimes he has been
convicted of committins.
The ultimate irony,» said Richard Larsen, auther of *“The Deliberate Stranser.“* a back
about Bundy’s crimes, may be that Bundy now faces the verv things that drove him te his crimes
—— a need to have complete control aver his victims.
Larsen said he thinks Bundy is “‘terrified“* at the prospect of execution because he will
be completely helpless ~- like his victims.

Across the country, prosecutors and detectives took another

talking to Bundy at the Florida State Prison believed he may
have murdered 100 youns women.
““Even the denials he save me when I brousht up certain
cases were just not Bundy-tvre deniais,’" said Robert Keprel>
& Washinaton state attorney Seneral“s investisater who probed
eisht so-called **Ted’* killings for i5 vears. Bundy confessed
to those slavings and others before his execution. But there
are several other murders in Washinstan that Keprel wonders
about.

_ Keppel, whom Bundy invited te Florida for his eleventh-hour
‘confessions, believes his lons invelvement with the serial
killer has helped him detect changes in Bundy“s mood and
speech that tirred him off when Bundy was Ivins.
It was Keprel whe sussested Bundy misht be respansible for
more than 109) slayings.
The FRISaid jast week that it is Planning a meetings in
February of law enforcement agencies that suspect Bundy may be
responsible for unsolved homicides in their states.
Terry Green: a major case specialist with the bureau’s
Violent Criminal Arrrehension effort in Guantica, Va.» where
the meeting will be held, said the idea is toe set
investigators ““in one Place so we can discuss the
Feculiarities in each case."
In addition to the slaving of the Florida sirl, Bundy had
been convicted of murderins two sorority sisters at Florida
State University in 1976.
Bundy’s name has surfaced as a possible suspect in slaringss
in Burlinsten. Vt.. where he was barn in 1946: in Pernsvivania
and New Jersey during the time Bundy was a student at Temple
University in Philadelphia, and throushout the West.
In Utah, Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Lt. Ben Forbes said
investisators have loaked at unsalved cases since Bundy
confessed to killing eisht women and siris in the state. But
Forbes Said he deesn*t know whether there misht be more
victims.
““We have researched naw with our state medical examiner
any “dane Does’ back ta the 1970s. There were only four or
five and none aprear to be his work.”* Forbes said.
In Vermont: Burlington police Detective Thomas Tremblay
said Bundy is not a suspect in a 1?71 murder and rare. ~“We
have no evidence or information that links him ta the scene of
our homicide,“ he said.
The connection was a bit stronger in New Jersey: where tuo
if-vear-cld women were stabbed to death on Memorial Day 1769.
Arthur Nerman, a forensic psychologist whe interviewed Bundy
for his defense. telerphaned Atlantic County. Nwd.. prasecutor
Jeffrey Blitz shortly after the execution to say Bundy had
canfessed ta these murders.
Blitz said the information from Norman *“wasn“t
satisfyvine’’ as a serious Tink ta Bundy, but the case is beings
jocked at again.
“*Bundy said while he was attending Temple he went to the
Jersey shore; picked up two girls,“ Blitz said. *“Norman came
te the conclusion that he killed these two sirls. Bundy never
admitted it. It was based on Nerman“’s coanciusions.“*.
In his confessions, Bundy specifically denied committing S
any murders in Vermont or New Jersey.
Keppel susrects that Bundy. who was 42 when he was rut to
death, began his murdersus ways when he was 14 and livins in
Tacoma: Wash.. even thoush Bundy denied invelvement in the
1961 disappearance and presumed murder of Ann Marie Burrs whe

““He said he was too youns, he lived teo far away, Those
were pretty weak excuses:‘" said Kerrel, who added he had
interviewed Bundy encush te develor a sense of when Bundy was
beings evasive or misleading.
Like Keppel. Beverly Burr still suspects Bundy in the death
of her daushter.
““Tourete to him CBundy] and he emphasized he was a normal
14-year-old boy: that he didn*t live near us and didn’t roam
around at might. I know that’s net true,“* she said. ““As far

Annual Debate Over Death Penalty in Board<
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) The Westchester County Board of
Legislators voted Monday to Support the restoration of the death
penalty in New York after Opponents argued it was a “simplistic,
misguided notion.'!
The debate came on the eve of the execution of Theodore Bundy for
the 1978 murder of a 12-year-old Florida girl.
Legislator Timothy Carey, R-Cortlandt-Peekskill, cited Bundy in
Supporting the death penalty, saying ~*the ultimate crime deserves
the ultimate punishment.!!
Bundy, who also received a death sentence for strangling two
students during a 1978 rampage at a Florida State University sorority
house in Tallahassee. In an effort to stave off Tuesday's execution,
Bundy confessed to more than a half dozen other slayings since 1974.
Carey also noted that a number of police officers had been killed
in the state and he blamed Gov. Mario Cuomo, who has consistently
vetoed restoring the death penalty.
The blood of the police officers is on his hands, said Carey.
But legislator Ernest Davis, D-Mount Vernon, argued that the state
~“does not have a perfect enough system by which we can judge.'!
Restoration of the death penalty is a “*reversal to barbaric
attitudes. ... It's a simplistic and misguided notion,'' he said.
Fellow Democrat John DeMarco of White Plains pointed to instances
of people being freed years after their conviction because they were
innocent and Audrey Hochberg, D-Scarsdale, said she had not seen any
statistics proving that a death penalty is a deterrent.
The board voted 11-5 to support the restoration of the death
penalty as part of its legislative package.
The last execution in New York occurred in 1963.
SOME EASTER MORN
We all must spend one lonely night,
In dark Gethsemane,
While others sleep, like Jesus weep
In bitter agony!
We, too, must beg that God will let
The bitter cup pass by,
And then -- "Thy will, not mine be done,"
Like Jesus, we must cry.
We all must tread the lonely road
That leads to Calvary,
The thorns must wear, tne cross must bear
In shame and misery;
And when, through gloom and darkened sky
God's face we cannot see,
We, too, must cry like Jesus, "Why
Hast Thou forsaken me?"
But on, some glorious Easter morn,
Perhaps not far away,
We'll see Thee come to roll the stone
Of sin and death away;
And then, by garden and by cross
Made pure and white and sweet,
We'll cast our lilies and our crowns
Down at Thy dear feet.
