Summary

Abstract:
George R. Metcalf was born in Auburn, NY on February 5, 1914. Metcalf was a newspaper publisher and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a Republican member of the New York State Senate fro, 1951-1965. Metcalf served the 47th District from 1951-1954, and then the 48th District from 1955 to 1965. Metcalf was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Freemasons, Eagles, Elks, and Lions. He died in Auburn Memorial Hospital on May 30, 2002. This collection contains records relating to Metcalf's time in the New York State Senate.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of materials from George R. Metcalf's service in the New York State Senate, including subject files, correspondence, news clippings, research, legislation, hearings, and reports.

Biographical / Historical:

George R. Metcalf was born in Auburn, NY on February 5, 1914. His grandfather was Massachusetts State Senator Edwin D. Metcalf. Metcalf graduated from Northwood School in 1932, and went on to attend Princeton University (1936), and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (1937). In 1938, he opened up the Auburn Press Publishing Company, which he operated until 1941, when he joined the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he went back into journalism, and wrote for the Auburn Citizen-Advertiser.

Metcalf, a Republican, won the election for the New York State Senate and was a member from, 1951-1965. Metcalf served the 47th District from 1951-1954, and then the 48th District from 1955 to 1965. After his time in the New York State Senate, he taught history at Auburn Community College, was the Chairman of the Board of his family's Columbian Rope Company, and was a director of the Auburn National Bank. Metcalf was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Freemasons, Eagles, Elks, and Lions. He died in Auburn Memorial Hospital on May 30, 2002 and was buried at the Fort Hill Cemetery. Metcalf was survived by his wife and five children.

Acquisition information:
George Metcalf donated his records to Syracuse University. Additonal acquisitions were donated in 1970. In 2006, the papers were transferred to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives.
