WALKER, George

Walker, a 23=year=old black Harnett Co., N. C., tenant farmer had
served a two year term at the Clinton Prison arm for larceny. On
the morning of July 22 , 1945, a 13-year-old white girl who lived
near Walker left her home with her father and her brother on a grape
_picking trip. After they had picked the prapes, the father and
brother went for a walk while the girl started home with the grapes
in a 48% pail. She was waylaid by a black man who she subsequently |
identified as Walker and taken into the woods where she was forcibly
raped. The Sheriff was notified and the girl was taken to a physi-
clan who-affirmed that she had been assaulted. Footprints leading
from the scene of the assault where some of her clothing was found —
w8re followed to Walker's home and the shoes that he was wearing
matched the footprints. H 6 was tried and convicted of the rape
_and sentenced to death. His case was appealed to the North Carolina
Supreme Court which upheld the verdict and sentence and on June ex
i946, he was asphyxiated in North Carolina's gas chamber. NG tan)
