Cassler, a 32-year-old white native of New York, was the son of Ger-
man emigrants. He served for two years during the Civil War with
the Sixteenth New York Heavy Artillery Company and after his release
drew a government pension for disabilities incurréd, He and his
wife moved to Beaver Crossing, Seward Co,, Nebr., where they home-
steaded and farmed sixty acres of land. Early in July, 1878, George
L, Munroe of Arkansas City, Kans,., arrived at the Cassler home and
made arrangements to board there, Two weeks later his mangled body
was found floating in the Blue River, and Cassler, who had Munroe's
team and other property in his possession was taken into custody and
charged with his murder when he gave confilcting stories as to how
he had acquirrd them. He maintained that he was innocent and even
though the case against him was purely circumstamtial, he was con-
victed and sentenced to die, There was no appeal and he was hanged
at Seward on May 20, 1879, The execution was supposed to be private,
but a mob of 3,000 persons who had gathered in Seward to witness the
hanging tore down the fence that had been erected and the execution
was carried out in their presence, Cassler showed great nerve,
mounting the scaffold without faltering, and made a brief speech in
which he reaffirmed his innocence and said that, while it was hard
