Johnson & Smalls, both black, hanged at Mount Holly, Nedey
on 3/2/1906. Johnson made a confession before leaving
cell but Smalls continued to maintain imocence, They
were convicted of having raped and murdered Miss Florence
Allingson in a barn near Moorestown on 1/18/1906, She
lived in a small cottage on Strawbridge farm, her only
companion being a little girl named Bessie Walker who she
had adopted. On the afternoon of 1/18/1906 her body was
found in the barn by an oil dealer who was informed by
Bessie Walker that two colored men had been in house,
There was evidence of adesperate struggle in the barn, He;
head had been crushed by a blow from a club and a strap hac
been orn from a horse blanket and bound tightly around hey
