Sanford, a 20-year-old white former Coast Guardsman, WABXARXS had been
rabked as an orphan in San “rancisco. After his release from the
Coast Guard, he was sentenced to a prison term abr armed robbery at a
the maximum security facility at Lancaster, In April, 19l8, he was

transferred to the California Youth UN i Camp at Ben Lomond. from
which he escaped on May 13, Sanford immediately headed for San *ran-
cisco, determined to shoot and kill she his former girl friend who
had promised to wait for him but who he had heard was dating someone
else. He was broke, so he went to the Capp St, boarding house owned
by Mrs. Felippa Griffith and, under the pretense of renting a-room,
gained admittancee While there, he agreed to make a minor repair for
Mrs. “riffith and when she bent over a tool chest to get him the tools
needed, he bludgeoned her to death with a 1)" 8tillson wrench and ran-
sacked the place looking for money. ‘Sanford was identified almost
Limediately through his fingerprints which were discovered all over
the house and he was taken into custody hiding underneath a bed in a

only motive his desire to obtain a gun with which to shoot his former

girl friend. He stated that he was ready to die as he felt that he
