defeated Hurst in a fairly close election, Early one morning in
December, “avanaugh's body was found in an alley near the jail.

He had been bludgeoned to death with an iron bolt and his skull

was broken in 35 places. Hurst was appointed acting Sheriff of

the County but then suspicion began to center on him in view of

the threats that he had made during the heat of the campaign and

he was indicted for the mrder. The evidence against him was wholly
circumstantial, the most damaging being the testimony of a friend of
Hurst's who testified that he had seen him following Cavanaugh on
the night of the mrder and that Hurst was carrying a paper bag.
Convicted and sentenced to hang, Hurst was executed at Glendive

on March 30, 1900.
