Personel, a 26-year-old white man, was born in Ireland where he
jearned a trade and, after the yxamminom death of his father WaS, as
a young man, left the sole support of a nagging mother. Finallyy he
left home and came to America where he remained for 18 months before
returning to +reland. After a marriage arranged by his mother ended
in disaster, he left home for the last time, vowing never to return
againe He went to the Colony of Maryland where, for a time, he was
' associated with a group of revivalist but he ax left them when he
met and became engaged to a widow and determined to settle down and
practice his trade. For some reason, Personel changed his mind and
Stole a horse, going to New York where he married a prostitute who
agreed to leave the streets for him, He contracted small pox and
she ,xax left their only breadwinner, returned to the only profession
which she knew. Personel became jealous and when he caught her with
two customers, he struck one of them, Robert White, on the head and
inflicted a fatal wound. Personel was tried in July, 1773, convicted
and sentenced to die. Prier to his being hanged in New York City on
September 10, 1773, he was converted to Christianity and wrote a bio-
