Plugdrak, 17-years-old, and Salek, 19-years-old, were white youths
who were born in raised in Niagara Falls, N. Ye, where both had, at
one time, been active as Boy Scouts, Early in 193), they both left
home and went on a robbery spree that took them into several States.
On the night of August 31, 193), the stolen car in which they were
riding was recognized by Buffalo Police Lt. George Uhl and his part-
ner, Patrolman Harold Milhauser. The car was forced to the side of
the road and Milhauser went to the passenger door and ordered Pluz-
drak from the car and took three pistols from him, Salek emerged
from the car with a drawn pistol and ordered Milhauser to return
Pluzdrak's weapons to him and the policeman did so, While Pluzdrak
covered Milhauser, Salek started back to the patrol car, Uhl saw
him coming and as he attempted to step out of the car, Salek began
firing and shot him down, Both boys then jumped into the patrol car
and fled, leaving the unharmed Milhauser with his dying partners

The car was abandoned near a Michigan Avenue boarding house where
the boys were hiding out and they were subsequently captured there.
Following their trial and conviction, a good deal of sentiment was
generated for a cammtation of their sentences to life imprisonment
because of their youth and the prosecuting attorney joined in the
