LOUNT

Lount, a slave whose first name is not known, was the property of
William Re Lount who lived at the Averme Hotel in Austin, ‘Tex, The
slave served as a body servant for his master and ran errands. On
occasion, he had been sent to a German produce grower who lived in a
shack and cultivated a garden wast of where the tenth ward school
building is now located and he had noticed that the German had accu-
mulated a considerable sum of money when he made change. On the
evening of April 19, 1862, the Black freedman who chopped wood at
the hotel left his axe with the slave while he delivered some wood
to an upstairs room. When he returned the slave was gone as was his
axe, A black woman who cooked for a physician waw Lount walk past
with the axe slung over his shoulder as did other people. He was
headed towards the little produce farm of the German, The next
morning, the gardener's body, mutilated by an axe and with a split
