Pahl in.a dispute over.money,.forcing Simmons to, drivé
the.d¢ar away....He, was finally, electrocuted, onAug. 11,.-
1925, and‘met,.his.death.calmly..and’ still. protesting his’
innocence. Shortly beffore he died, he recited the poem,
"The Killing of Dan McGrew" for reporters.

Simmons, 22-year-old native of Montana, was a cowboy
and former baseball player, deputy sheriff and bootlegger
He went to Omaha, Nebr., where he spent a couple of month
--and. gambled away his money before moving on to Spencers
Nebr. where he became friendly with Spencer garage owner
_ Frank Herman Pahl, On the night of May 1), 1922, Simmons
and Pahl drove-out toa bridge near Spencer and Pahl was
bludgeoned to death with a hammer and robbed of $180.00.
Simmons was captured shortly afterwards in Norfolk, Neb,
and_retruned to Spencer, He was taken from the County
jail to the state penitentiary for safekeeping shortly
before a mob broke in for the purpose of lynching hithe
Convicted of Pahl's murder, Simmons was sentenced to die

but as sustained fight was waged Bor his life by his
