Rhodes, a 22-year-old black man, was a native of Liberty Co,, Tex.,
who moved to Galveston with his family when he was 9-years-old, He
went to school for a time and learned to read and write before he
went to work as a laborer, Addicted to drinking, he had several
times been arrested on misdemeanors prior to his marriage to Mary
May, a 2/7@year-old woman who was employed as a domestic servant. He
was allowed to move into his wife's employer's house and live with
her as long as he maintained good behaviour, but he soon violated
this and was told to leave, He convinced her to quit her job and

go with him and they remained together until Sept., 1885, when he

was charged with assault with intent to kill a man, fled and became

a fugitive from justice, Mary then returned to her former employers,
explaining that she and her husband were separated, and was given

her old job back, On Oct. 21, 188), Rhodes returned to Galveston and,
learning that his wife had been dating a barber, tried to locate him
for thepurpose of killing him, Around 7:30 that evening, he went to
her employer's house and called her outside whe they stood talking
by a fencegin full view of her mmpk sister and her employer's wife,
Rhodes then drew a pistol and shot her. When she fell to the ground,
he straddled the body, cut her throat and calmly walked away. He
