Gin Pong, a native of China, emigrated to the United States and
settled in Spokane, Wash., where he had a room in the Chinese quar=
ter adjacent to that of a fellow countryman, Lee Tong. In February,
1896, they got into a fight over a gambling debt and both were
arrested and sent to the city jail, After their release on March 1,
they returned to their respective rooms, Lee Tone was evident ly
afraid of Gin Pong and remained secluded in his quarters for several
hours, finally emerging late in the afternoon to obtain a pail of
water, Gin Pong, lying in wait, attacked him with a club and they
fought againg When Lee Tong appeared to be winning the scuffle, Gin
Pong ra n back into his room and returned with a hatchet in each hand,
He then litteraly hacked Lee Tong to death and severed his head from
his body, He was promtly arrested and tried,convicted and sentenced
bo die shortly afterwards, His case was unsuccesffully appealed to
the Washington Supreme Court and then, at the request of his attorneys
he was granted a sanity trial, The preponderance of the testimony,
both by the expert witnesses summoned and by those who knew him, was
that he was sane and the jury so ruled, On April 30, 1897, after

having eaten a last meal of Fried chicken, Saratoga chips, French
fried potatoes, pie, fruit and a bottle of wine, he calm yn went bo
