| it ...The single case of rape on record (by a slave in Hous-
ton County) is worthy of a hasty glance. Stephen a slave,
assaulted one Mary Daniel, a white girl, in a cotton field
while her father was absent at a 'housee-raising,' but did
not accomplish his purpose. After conviction in the in-
ferior court the case was appealed to the Superior Court
which affirmed the decision of the lower court and Stepher
