Hawk, a 20-year-old Chambersburg, Pa., fax white farm worker, was due
to inherit several thousand dollars on his 21st birthday. He was al-
so engaged to marry a 20-year-old Marion girl, Catharine Gelwix on
Jane 1, 1937. Hawk, however, had fallen in love with a 17-year-old
girl and decided to rid himself of his fiancee by mrder. On New
Year's Eve, he went to the house where Catharine lived with her
widowed mother and 15«year-old sister, Helen Louise. He left at 10
o'clock saying that he was going to the farm where he worked and go
to bed. After the “elwix's had retired for the night, he returned
and slipped into the house. He poured kerosene over Mrs. Gelwix
and Helen Louise whe were asleep in one room, set it afire and then
docked the door to the bedroom where they could not excape. He then

he hit her over the head with his flashlight, poured kerosene over
her and left. Catharine, however was not unconscious and managed

covered that he had been dating the other girl, He agreed to a lie
detector test and when it indicated that he had guilty knowledge of
