PALM, Harold Lee

Palm, a 3l-year-old black man,% was employed as a cook in San Antonio,
Texas, where he and his wife, a domestic servant, lived in a small
house behind the home of her white employers, On the night of Oct.
9, 1945, her employers were out for the evening and their two chil-
dren, a l6-year-old girl and an &eyear-old boy, were in the house
alone, Palm entered the house kxk by cutting a screen and forced the
two children to accompany him at gun point to a vacant, wood-covered
lot. He bound the boy's hands and feet and then brutally beat the
girl into submission and raped her, She managed to grab his pistol
and throw it into some weeds where it was subsequently discovered by
the police, After he had finished, Palm returned to his apartment
and the girl, who had been cut and whose teeth had been knocked
loose, reported the incident. Palm's wife allowed the police to
searcht heir apartment and he was found hiding in his room with his
clothes bloodstained. In addition to being positively identified by
the girl and her brother, his fingerprints matched those found on the
window through which he gained entry and he was convicted and sen-
tenced to die, His case was unsuccessfully appealed to the Texas
Court of Criminal Appeals and he was electrocuted at the Texas State
