on January 21, 1937, "But I doubt that I have ever seen

a more genuine smile in Sing Sing's death chamber than
that on the face of Charles Ham, youthful Negro who had
killed and robbed a Brooklyn storekeeper, He kept his
promise he had made on the morning of his last day, ‘I'm,
not worrying,’ he had said, ''I'1l be just the same at th
finish as I am now,' And he was, Not once did the plea-~
sant expression change as he was prepared for the current,
and the smile was still there when his body was removed
from the chair, Though Warden Lawes usually does not look
at the condemned after they are placed in the chair, for
some reason I do not know, his eyes never left Ham during
the entire proceedings,"
