CHAMPION and VALENTINE June 29; 1753.

Champion, a black slave owned by Hutchins 5urton,y and Valentine, a
black slave owned by Bowler Cocke, together with Lucy, also owned by
Burton, and SHSESK Sampson, Harry and George, owned by William Ran-
dolph, were all tried in Goochland Coes Vaey on June 25, 1733, for
having murdered one Robert Allen, possibly an overseer, Champion
pleaded guilty and was sentenced to be hanged while the other four
all pleaded not guilty, After hearing the evidence, the Court of
Oyer and Terminer found Valenine guilty also and sentenced him to
death, Sampson, Harry and George were all acquitted while lucy was
convicted of having knowledge of the crime after it had been commi-
tted and failing to report it and it was ordered that "she receive
on her bare back twenty one lashes well laid on at the Common
whipping post & that she be then discharged." Champion and Valen-
tine were hanged at Goochland Court House on June 29, 1733. Accord-
ing to the sentence, after their deaths, their heads and quarters
were cut off and displayed in several parts of the County. The
