"New York, Sept. 16, 1785: Yesterday was execu-
ted on the gallows in the fields John Benson,
a mulatto fellow condemned at the last session
of the Supreme Court. A more hardened and
ferocious villain never before graced so ex-
alted a station, nor was seen to suffer with
less sensation of his miserable fate," GAZETTE,
