Lewis, a 28-year-old black man, was born near Middletown, Jefferson
County, Ky., and lived there all of his life, working as a farm la-
borer. He and a l6#ear-old black youth, George Dean, were both ena-
moured of the same girl and both wished-to take her to a dance that
gas held in Biddletown on the night of November 19, 1891, She told
both of them that on the evening of the dance, they should run a
race to her house and she would accompany the winner, They made an
agreement to meet one mile from the house at 7:30, When they reached
the rendesvous point, Lewis discovered that Dean was riding a mle
and when Dean beat him to the girl's house and she accompanied him,
Dewis declared that the race was unfair. He arrived at the dance in
a fould mood and several different times attempted to provoke a fight
with Dean, Finally, Dean called him a "chinch-bug" and left the
house, Lewis followed and, drawing a pistol, shot him in the back of
the head and killed him. He was promptly arrested and when he was
brought to trial on January 25, he maintained that he had killed Dean
only after Dean advanced against him with a razor, Four witnesses
