Sl-year-old white man, hanged at Maryland State Prison
(Carroll County) on August 9, 1929, "Baltimore, Md., Aug.
9, 1929-John Orestes Marsh was hanged in the state peniten-
tiary here early this morning for the murder of his 28-yeare
old wife. The trap of the prison gallows was sprung at
12:05 AM, and the man pronounced dead at 12:18 as a score of
witnesses looked on. Marsh, who had displayed a calm forti-
tude during his incarceration in the death house at the pri-
son, where he had been confined since he was sentenced on
May 28, shuffled to the gallows and collapsed as the guards
started to adjust the noose. He was held up, the rope adju-
