Hong Yick, a lil-year-old Chinese, was a laborer in Seattle, Washes,
where hewas an active member of the Suey Sing tong and served as a
Tong watchmane In December, 1934, the membership records of the
Suey Sing tong were stolen and Lee Wing Quen, 25-years-old, a mem-
ber of the Hop Sing tong was suspected. Later that month, Hong
Yick bludgeoned Lee Wing Quen to death, After his arrest, he ad-
mitted the killing and his defense at his trial was based on his
claim that he had committed the mrder to prevent a bloody tong
war from breaking out in Seattle's Chinatown, In spite of what he
evidently considered was a noble motivation, Hong Yick was ae
and sentenced to die and he was hanged at the Washington State Prison
on July 19, 1935,
