The case of the Syate vs, Samel, (a slave of Dr, John
McAden,) for the murder of Pater, a slave of Mr, Ashley
Ge La, was tried on F,.iday and consumed the whole of
that day. The Jury, after an able charge from the Judge,
returned a verdict of MXX guilty, and on Saturday the
Prisoner was sentenced tobe hung. Motions for a new
trial and an arrest of judgment on account of an alleged
defect in the indictment having been made and overruled,
an appeal was taken to the S,,preme Court. The Solicitor
General for the State and Messrs. Kerr and Graham for the
