Female slave, hanged Sumter District, South Carolina, February 2h, 1825.

"Camden, Feb. 25, 1825=MURDER. = The following statement of a most diabolical deed,

is furnished us by a very respectable gentleman, residing near the spot where the

act was committed: On the night of the 17th inst. a Mrs. Stuckey of Sumter District,

was inhymanly murdered by a servant maid, Mrs, S. had for several days and nights

been attending her grandmother who was extremely ills on the evening of the 17th, she re-
turned to her residence to regulate her domestic affairs and enjoy some relaxation.

At the proper hour she retired to repose; having two infants with her, leaving two
children, who were in the Kitchen with the servant. The servant in a short time

left the Kutchen, entered the mansion of her Mistress, and there perpetrated the

deed by striking Mrs. S. two or three blows onthe head, and, it is said, cut her

throat, which baused her immediate death. Mre Sey the husband, was at the Grand-
mother's of the deceased. When the servant returned to the Kitchen, the children

saw her throw an apron behind the door, to which they paid no attention, suspecting
nothing. When the children entered the house, they heard one of the infants

struggle, they rushed into the room, called their mother, and hearing no reply, put

their hands upon her to awake her to relieve the childs; but lamentable to tell, they
found the bed clothes wet; a fire was immediately kindled and they heheld their beloved
mother and one infant bathed in the blood ofthe deceased object of their affection

and regard, They immediately alarmed the nearest neighbors who repaired to the dreaded
spot, and to their regret and astonishment witnessed the reality of the doleful tale.

On an investigation of the matter, the children related the circumstance of the aproy which
gas immediately examined and found to be covered with blood. = The servant was apprehended,
tried and convicted and was to be executed yesterday." COURIER, C,arleston, SC, Mar.

Slave, hanged at Pendleton, South Carolina, on October 17, 1838,

"MOST HORRIBLE! = A murder, of the most revolting nature, was committed upon the
bodies of Mr, William Baxter and two of his children, a son and daughter, on the
lst instant, near Pendleton, S, C., by a negro man. Mr, B. was a native, and
respectable citizen of this county, and was returning from Alabama, at the time of
his death, Arriving near Pendleton, he pitched his tents for the night, and, at the
hour of midnight, when all were asleep, the infernal monster sought this oppor-
tunity of carrying into effect his diabolical purpose, From the appearance of the
wounds inflicted, it is supposed that they were killed with an axe, the head of the
Father, when found, being nearly split in two, The murderer was a negro man, whom
the deceased had purchased, a short time previous, in Georgia, in which direction
he was seen returning the day after the murder was committed, We do hope that this
vile miscreant may be shortly apprehended, and made to atone for his crime by the
most severe penalties in the power of the law, No punishment could be too severe
for such a being, = RUTHERPORDTON GAZETTE,"
RALEIGH REGISTER AND NORTH CAROLINA GAZETTE, Raleigh, North Carolina, October 22,
1838 (2 256)

"A young male slave was recently burnt at Abbeville
South Carolina in pursuance of a judicial sentence
for attempting to murder his mistress when the rest
of the family were absent. He attacked her without
provokation, beat her with a flatiron and she having
attempted to run to a neighbor's when he was seeking
a broadaxe, he followed her and made her return and
had nearly killed her when some of the family re-
turned. She is expected to recover."

Slave, hanged John's Island, South Carolina, January » LTS

"Charleston, Jan, 20, 178l-A correspondent has favored us with the following account
of a disturbance that happened on Tuesday last (Jan. 17) among the negroes on Dr,
Carson's estate on John's Island: 'On Tuesday morning a boy came express to inform
me that the overseer had killed one of the negroes, I immediately went over, and
found the plantation deserted by “he overseer and his family and that the drivers
had abscounded, The negroes appeared to be in a state of meanness which conveyed
an idea of an insurrection amongst them, and made me at a loss how to act. Mr. Je
Stuart had been to see the overseer, and gave me a short narrative of what had
happened, The negroes having that morning attacked the overseer and drivers, with
hoes, aexes and polesg an ax had been pitched at one of the drivers, but it turning,
the shaft struck his head, The overseer, seeing his danger, though armed, retreated,
but finding them advance and an ax uplifted against his head he shot the villain
and wounded two others with small shot, A party had surrounded the drivers at the
same instant, and while the fatal axes were impending, the fate of their heather
attracted their attention, and gave the drivers a few moments time to escape into
the woods, The overseer, though a strong man, took to his heels and ran for half a
mill till overcome with fatigue; he was ready to drop when a thin weakly negro
threw his arms round him and led him until the others came up. One attempting to
cut his throat with a rice hook, another to beat out his brains with his own mus-
ket while the others were mauling him with his powder horn and sticks, produced
such a condition and bustle, that the poor man's life was preserved, until three
good negroes got to his assistance, In the evening I sent to Col, Fenwicke an
account of what had happened who with a happyB#&SaKa% presence of mind and (7?)
carried a corporal and 12 of his men with him yesterday morning, secured seven of
the ringleaders, who were this day tried by “wo justices of the peace and a freeholder
and after aa fair and candid examination, one of them is condemned to be hanged,
another to be cropped and branded and the rest severely flogged, The reason of this
insurrection is to me yet a secret; the ostensible cause was because the overseer
wanted to remove the corn of several negroes who had the evening before gone off in
a boat; The were Mr. Stuart's negroes that went away, as well as the one shot and
the other hung, It is a heavy loss to him, but that justice might be done, he
gave every assistance to bring the delinquents to punishment,"
