"In the pre-settlement period (Russell Co., Va.), it was
the custom of hunters from the Clinch Valley. settlements
to form parties and hunt several weeks at camps along the
streams that flowed into Russell Fork and Levisa rivers.
For several years it was a hunter's paradise, For pro-
tection against wild beasts and snakes they would go out

from camp in pairs each morning, hunt all day in the dense
forest and return to camp at night. On one of these
hunting trips Sylvanus Brewer killed Samuel Indicut near
Abner's Gap in 1817. This was the first known death of a
white person in what is now Dickenson County, His grave
is still marked on Long Ridge, Brewer was tried and con-
victed for this crime and hanged at Lebanon, Virginia, on

May 22, 1818, being the first person to be hanged in
Russel County" : : oar
