27-year-old whive man, hanged, Folsom Prison (Sacramento
Co.) on July 1h, 1905, Spent restless night but walked
to gallows with steady step and made no statement. Murphy
with 12 other convicts escaped from Folsom on July 27, 190
after assault on prison officials in which Guard Cotter wa
killed, Chief Turnkey Cochrane dangerously wounded, and
the late WardengThomas Wilkinson, Capt. of the Guard R. J,
Murphy and other officers captured and marched out of the
prison grounds, The convicts divided into two bands after
the fight at Pilot Hill in which one of their number, J,
J. Allison, was killed, Murphy and John H, Wood, the lea~
der of the band, worked their way to Reno, Neve, where
they were captured several weeks after the break, In the
flight they had an encounter with a detachment of the
militia located at Placerville in which two members of Co,
H, Rutherford and Jones, were killed, Harry Eldredge, ano
