1920 (Columbia, July 2), 1920=-Because the electric chair
at the state penitentiary would not respond to tests,
and the superintendent of the prison, Col, A. K. Saunders
was afraid it would not work, John Maxwell, a negro, who
was scheduled to die this morning at 11 o'clock for mur-
der, has a two weeks lease on life. He was reprieved by
Gov, Cooper until a mechanic from the factory manufactur-
ing the chair can come to Columbia and repair it. ““ax-
