A Canadian miner, 36, Member Company A, lst Ore,
Cavalry, court martialed for deserting from
Camp 2, Neuf River, 27 August 1863, Arpested
next day. Col/ R. F. Mayry, writing to Gen,
Wright, urged commutation, citing 2 years of
exemplary service. Portland Oregonian of 17
March indicated Ely's might have been spared
if telegraph had reached post as Lincoln had
commuted punishment of deserters under death
sentence, CIVIL WAR JUSTICE, by Dr. Robert Rx
