}old), the murderer of Spencer Gillard, the watchman of a
Tuolumme County gold mine, was hanged today. Sullivan died
‘bravely. He mrdered Spencer Gillard at the Juniper Mine
on the night of April 13, 1897. Believing that Gillard had
reported him for misconduct to the managers of the mine,
Sullivan secured a rifle and at night crept up behind his
victim and shot him to death. Securing a fast horse, the
murderer succeeded in making his escape and for many months
all track of him was lost. Eventually he was heard of in
Southern California and that part of the state, New Mexico
Arizona and Utah were flooded with his descriptions and

photographs, He was recognized in New Mexico, captured,
returned for trial and convicted, His attorneys appealed

to the Supreme Court for a rehearing, but were refused and
