CHACON, Miguel

Chacon, a black native of Cuba, emigrated to New York City where he
met Mrs, Maria Williams, the wife of another Cuban exile, Following
a spat, Mrs, Williams and her lover parted company, and Chacon moved
into her house at 126 West 27th St. where they established a common-
law relationship, Chacon fell in Love with the woman but when her
former lover returned penitent, she decided that she preferred his
company and on June 20, 188);, she ordered Chacon to leave, He became
enraged, drew a pistol and shot and killed her, He attempted to kill
his rival also before he fled, A few hours later, the police received
a tip from one of the leaders of a Cuban Revolutionary Society that
Chacon was hiding on the roof of a house on Spring Street and he was
apprehended there. Tried, convicted and sentenced to die, he was
hanged at the Tombs Prison on July 9, 1886, He went to his death
calmly and with no show of emotion,
