KINYON, John

Kinyon, a 75-year-old black man, lived with his son, a tenant farmer,
on a farm near Yreedmoor, N. C, On Sept. 3, 1935, the 11-year-old
daughter of his landlord was sent to the tenant house on an errand.
Kinyon dragged her into a bedroom, tore her @lothes from her and
brutally raped her before his daughter-in-law could 28000 pull hin

house and was captured 12 hours later just outside of Hester as he
was evidently making his way to the home of another son. The little
girl's father took her to a physician who, following a thorough
examinahion,confirmed that she had been raped. The Governor sent
patrolmen to Oxford and took Kanyon to the State Prison where he

was held until the time set for his trial when he was speedily found
guilty and sentenced to die. His attorneys sought a commutation of
his sentence on the grounds mxm of mental weakness but were un-
successful. Kanyon, unnerved and trembling, went to his death in
North Yarolina's gas chamber on Aug. 21, 1936.
