Welcome, the 17-year-old son of poor French parents, was a n&bive of
Hinesburg, Vt. On Sept. 30, 1868, he was acquitted of the charge of
horse-stealing. On the night of Oct. 2, 1868, having been told by a
former workman employed by 72-year-old Perry Russell that the old
man kept a sizeable sum of money in a strong bux, Welcome hid out in
the barn on the Russell farm until Mr. and Mrs, Russell. had gone to
bed. Arming himself with a heavy hinge which he found in the barn,
he went to the door and knocked. When Russell opened it, he bludgeoned
him to death with the S&&k hinge. Mrs. R&K8XX Russell ran from the
house screaming While Welcome um seized the strong box and left through
another doore Whenhe opened the box, he diséovered that it conta®ned
only some old papers. He had been seen lurking around the neighbor-
hood on the day preceding the crime and was immediately taken into
custody and confessed. Convicted and sentenced to hang, a bill was
passed by the Vermont House of “epresentatives to commte his sentence
but it failed of passage in the Senate, He was hanged at the Vermont
State Prison on Jahuary 20, 1871. )
