ruly conduct, but psychiatrists claimed after examining him that his
actions were not those of anyactually insane man, but those of one
who was feigning insanity and he ws convicted by a jury that delib-
erated for only one hour and sentenced to die, He was asphyxiated

VARGA, Laszlo

Varga, @ 20~year-old native of Hungary, was allowed entry into the
United States in 191.6 as a displaced person suponsesed by a Lutheran
regigious organization, He had difficulty learning English and was
of such a disposition that he was unable to hold down any job. On
several occasions, he was treated in warious mental hospitals from
which he was always released with a diagnosis of mm being unbalance
but not insane. In March, 198, he quit his job as a dishwasher in
a Eureka, Calif., restaurant and started hitch hiking east. On Mon-
day, March 22, he arrived in Wells, Nevada, and went to the rectory
of the local Presbyterian Chruch where he sought help. ‘The Minister
was out of town, but his 22-year-old wife, Mrs, Billie Rhea Morning,
invited Varga inside and fed him. When he discovered that she was
at the Rectory alone with her infant. son, Varga attacked her with

a rolling pin and, after forcing her to give him two checks each in
the amount of $19.17, he BEMEAXXPXEABSAXKKE tied her to a bed and
tortured her before he brutally raped her, Her husband found her
