"The eastern mail was robbed a few hours after it left the
city (of Baltimore, Md.) on the nite of 3-11-1818 and -
Hare and Alexander were convicted of the deed in the U. §.
Court and,having put the driver in jeopardy of his life,
were hung in the jail yard on Thursday, 9-10-1818. On
this occasion, the mode of exeaution from a cart was —
changed to a drop or scaffold, with a trap door, and so
