Conley, a white man,had contracted to do the assessmmnt of the Guade =
lupe Placers, four miles from Questa in northern Taos Cows Ne Mes for
the sum of $100. He hired & S, Redding, his 20-year-old son, James,
his son-in-law, Jesus Herrera, and 68=$ear-old Charles Purdy to help
him with the job. When they learned that Conley had contracted to
do the work for only $100, they immediately began quarreling with
him, maintaining that he should have charged $600, This resulted in
bitter feelings which became more intense when Conely discharged
Herrera after one-half day's work and when Purdy accused him of not
paying for some work that had been done on an earlier mining claim,
