Gemmell, a 29-year-old U. 5. Navy Airman was stationed at the Port
Columbus, Ohio, Naval Air Station as was KXSXS#48HM Robert Grimshaw.
The Gemmells and the Grimshaws.were close friends and when Grimshaw
became hospitalized with a broken leg, Gemmell and Laura Grimshaw
began having an affair which lasted for weveral weeks. On the night
of July 30, 1952, she was strangled to death ih the Grimshaw home
after returning from a dance at the enlisted men's club, Gemmell's
automobile had been seen at the house on the night of the murder as
it had in the past on a mumber of occasions and when he went AWOL
from a pass, he was suspectedy and an alert was issued for his
automobile. He was apprehended by the “tate Police in Southern
Illinois and returned to Port Columbus for questioning. He admitted
killing Laura Grimshaw but gave two different versions of what had
happened, either of which could have been the truth. He originally
claimed that she had determined to terminate their affair and that
he was waiting for her when she returned from the danne. When he
was unsuccessful in his efforts to dissuage her, he strangled her
to death. He later stated that she threatened to tell his wife of
their relationship and that he killed her for that reason.
