Sullivan, a 43-year-old white man was a native of Pueblo, Colo. He had
served:a.term in the Colorado Penitentiary and after his release moved
to Manitou Springs, Colo., where he obtained employment as a caretaker
and handyman. On Jan. 9, 1912, he delivered a letter to the residence
of Mrs. Carrie Winona Culbertson, a middle-aged and prominent society
matron who had been in Denver and whose mail had been delivered to
Sullivan's employers during her absence, When he arrived at the Cul-
bertson home, Mrs. Culbertson was in the basement and he went there.
After giving her the letter, he asked to borrow a rake and a shovel
for some work that he had to perform for his employers, As she bent
intoa storage roam to get them, he stabbed her in the back with a
knife that he had found on a shelf in the basement. He left the body
there overnight and returned early the next morning, assaulted the
corpse and stole $5.00 from her purse, Sullivan was an immediate sus-
pect after the body was discovered three days Aater and he was arrest~
ed in his room at his employers. “e confessed after one and one-half

hours interrogation and reenacted the crime, Tried and convicted, he

was sentenced to dea th and he was asphyxiated at the Colorado State
Prison on Sept. 20, 1913.
