Gook, 2 23-year-old black man, lived in the Avondale section of
Birmingham, Ala, He had been arrested on several occasions and
had served terms both on the City's streets and in the mines, On
the night of May 1), 1898, he was in the process of robbing a
store in the Avondale section near the. Cain Station of the East
lake electric line when his movements were overheard by John Black=
burn and John #vans, conductors for the line, who were walking home
to their boarding house. They summoned the proprietor of the busi-
ness and the three men entered and took Cook into custody. They
performed a casual search but overlooked a razor-sharp knife that
Cook had in his possession, As they were walking Cook to a tele-
phone to summon a policeman, Cook pulled the knife, stabbed Black-
burn through the heart and ran. When the Sheriff arrived, he
bought dogs and they traced Cook to his home about one-half mile
