Jack, a black slave, was owned by Jubal Early of Franklin Co,, Va.
He was accused of having raped Sarah Hickerson on the night of Oct,
16, 179), and was tried before a Gourt of Oyer and Terminer in
Franklin County on October 25, He pleaded not guilty but he was
convicted and, in accordance with the judgement of the Court, he
was hanged publicly en Nov, 28, 179). The Auditer of Public
Accouhbts was ordered to pay Mr. Early $333 in compensation for
Jack and the Sheriff was subsequently allowed a $5,25 fee for
having carried out the execution,
