"RAY, Robert, desertem drom 71 Indisna Volun-
teers, was shot at Indianapolis, Ind., on Ma rch
27 by order of court mar$ial; he was taken pri-
soner at “ichmond, Kentucky, paroled, and volun-
tarily went over to the Confederates, and re-
turned to Federal side as a spy (Nashville DIS-
PATCH, 31 March, 1863). Robert Gay, Company D,
71 Indiana Volunteers, shot as spy March 273

had enlisted in Clay County, Indiana; charged
with desertion and for taking oath to South.
