ALLEN, Fred, GRAMMELL, Stanley and JOHNSON, Robert

Allen, a native of Georgianna, Ala., Grammell, a native of Stroud,
Alaes and Johnson, a native of Tuscumbia Alas, were all black sol-~
diers stationed at Camp Dodge, lowa. On the emening of May 2), 1918,
they approached an automobile parked on the military reservation in
which a young Yes Moines man was parked with his 17-year-old girl
friend, a former telephone operator on the base. One of the soldiers
identified himself as a military policeman and asked the youth to
step out of the car. When he did so, the three soldiers knocked him
unconscious and then all three brutally raped the girl, When the
youth regained consciousness, he gave an alarm and all black soldiers
at Camp Dodge were paraded before the young couple. They Béxssesx
identified 4llen, Grammell and Johnson as their assailants and the
three men confessed. They were tried at a Court Martial, found
guilty ond sentenced to hang. When President Wilson refused to in-
tervene in the case, they were publicly hanged on the base on July
