Sterling, a Canadian tramp, was traveling through the United States
on. foot early in 1876 when he accosted lizzie Grumbacher on a lonely
road..on-Loveland Hill, Youngstown, Ohio. When Miss Grumbacher re-
sisted his sexual advances, he raped and killed her, Sterling was
areestéd for the murder, tried, convicted and sentenced to death,
His case was appealed to both the Ohio Circuit and Supreme Courts,
both of which upheld his conviction and sentence and he was hanged
in the Mahbning County Jail Yard, Youngstown, Ohio, at noon on
March 6, 1877.
