O'BRIEN, John ('§miling Jackt) —

Hanged, Chicago, Ill., Feb, 20, 1920, for murder of police-
man Richard Burke, Sheriff had originally planned to have
all prisoners witness hanging but did not do so when in-
formed he could be prosecuted for malfeasance, Grand jury
requested and allowed to witness for first time in Chicago's
history. A few days prior to exedution, O'Brien made states
ment claiming that he did not kill Burke but stood trial
for "Sonny" Dunn, a police character who had promised to
use "influence in high places" sd see that he got a short
prison sentence,
