McCABE, James P.

McYabe, a white farmer living at Mount Pleasant Township, Wayne Co.,
Pa., visited with his in-laws on the night of Dec, 3SR® 30, 1885.
Also visiting was Michael Riley, another farmer, The two men left
together around 10 o'clock that night and Riley's body was discover-~
ed by the side of the road on Jan, 1, 1886, He had been bludgeoned
to death with the edge and the poll of an axe. After killing Riley,
McCabe, who had no money previously, went to a KAXAKK Hotel three

or four miles away and, after arousing the owner, told him not to
ell anyone of Kks the time of his arrival. He spent the next two
days drinking and carousing and was in an intoxicated state when he
was taken into custody and charged with the murder, Riley's wallett
was found in a shed behind the hotel and McYabe showed officers wher
he had hidden the axe that he had used to kill Riley. Convicted

and sentenced to hang, McCabe escaped jail on May 18, 1887, and was
not recaptured until Sept.12 when he was found hiding in a barn
