his proficiency with a bayonet, and worked as a carnival ride operator

in July, 1942, when he entered into a conspiracy with his girl friend,
Violet Merryman, and her friend, Emma Virginia Dooms, to lure unsus-
pecting civilians who had flashed large rolls of money in taverns into
the country and rob them, They successfully robbed several men, leav-
ing them beaten unconscious, but then decided that they would soon be
captured when their victims identified them and decided to kill their
next victims, On the night of July 17, they lured 33-year=01A Frank
largrove to a deserted spot on Wister Road and Miss Merryman bludgeoned
him with a hammer while Farris stabbed him through the heart before
they took $200 from his wallet and pushed his body into a gulley where
it was subsequently found, Later that same evening, they lured Vinicio
Bichi to a deserted spot on Valley Road and once again Miss Merryman
struck him over the head with a hanmer and Farris slit his throat so
deeply that he was almost decapitated, Two men who resided nearby
heard Bichi scream and they arrived in time to see Farris and the two
women departing in an automobile driven by Miss Dooms, They were able
